ABOUT THE GALLERY

Robert Irwin installation at william turner gallery 1991

William Turner Gallery opened its doors in 1991 on Market Street in Venice, California, in the former studio of renowned Light and Space artist DeWain Valentine. Founded by William Turner—a trained attorney, arts advocate, and longtime arts editor for Venice Magazine—the gallery quickly established itself as a pivotal venue in the vibrant Los Angeles art scene. Its early location placed it in the heart of an historic creative enclave: the same street where Larry Gagosian launched his first gallery, where Jean-Michel Basquiat famously sourced materials for a major body of work, and where iconic artist Larry Bell maintained his Venice studio.

From its inception, the gallery has been known for rigorously curated exhibitions that spotlight both emerging talent and established artists. Over the past three decades, William Turner Gallery has showcased many exciting names in contemporary art, including Ed Moses, Robert Irwin, Fred Eversley, Peter Lodato, Andy Moses, Melanie Pullen, Shingo Francis, Casper Brindle, Jimi Gleason, Eric Johnson, Greg Miller, Jennifer Wolf, Mark Steven Greenfield, Alex Couwenberg, Jay Mark Johnson, Roland Reiss, and Guillermo Bert.

In 2003, the gallery relocated to Bergamot Station Arts Center in Santa Monica—a former industrial site transformed into a major cultural destination that now attracts more than 600,000 visitors annually. Located at 2525 Michigan Avenue, the gallery occupies a spacious 5,000 sq. ft. venue ideal for its museum-quality exhibitions. The Bergamot site itself has a storied past, formerly serving as a Red Line trolley stop in the late 1800s before becoming home to factories and warehouses. Its transformation into an arts center in the 1990's marked a turning point for Santa Monica’s cultural landscape.William Turner Gallery has played a vital role in shaping the visual arts community in Los Angeles, with a program that reflects a strong engagement in material experimentation, particularly through the legacy of California’s Light and Space movement. The gallery works closely with collectors, designers, and architects to place investment-quality works in sophisticated residential and corporate spaces.

Gallery Principal William Turner has served on the board of California Lawyers for the Arts for over 34 years and was appointed to the California Arts Council by Governors Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jerry Brown, serving until 2015. His dual background in law and arts advocacy has positioned the gallery as both a cultural hub and a thought leader within the art world.

Rob Brander, Director of the gallery since 2003, brings a wealth of experience from the Center for Creative Photography in Tucson, Arizona, where he worked on important projects related to Ansel Adams, Gary Winogrand, and Edward Weston. At William Turner Gallery, he has overseen major exhibitions, including the gallery’s participation in the Getty’s Pacific Standard Time: Art & Science Collide, with the critically acclaimed show Light Matter, examining intersections between art and scientific inquiry.
