Peter Lodato (1946-2025)

It is with profound sadness that William Turner Gallery announces the passing of Peter Lodato—beloved artist, friend, and a vital figure in the Venice and greater Los Angeles art communities. Peter was a defining presence at the gallery for nearly 30 years, and his loss is deeply felt.

Peter’s quiet, gracious demeanor belied an unwavering dedication to his craft. He painted every day in his intimate Venice studio, producing works that were often monumental in scale—radiant with a meditative, almost spiritual energy. His paintings emanated a quiet intensity that reflected the depth of his inquiry into light, perception, and the unseen.

Peter’s artistic journey began in the late 1960s with a series of environmental light installations, part of the burgeoning West Coast Light and Space movement. His 1971 installation at LACMA’s “24 Young Los Angeles Artists” exhibition—an interplay of light, mirrors, and shadow—garnered early acclaim. He often cited the oculus of Rome’s Pantheon as a formative influence, inspiring his lifelong pursuit to shape space through light. His early work culminated in his inclusion in the 1981 Whitney Biennial.

As he moved from installations to painting, Peter brought with him the same rigor and fascination with perception. At first glance, his works appear as refined geometric abstractions—but closer engagement reveals subtle brushwork, nuanced layers, and vibrant fields of color that shift the viewer’s sense of space and depth. His paintings operate within a paradox: at once reductive and expansive, minimal yet emotionally resonant.

Influenced by Eastern philosophy, Lodato’s palette often referenced the color symbolism of the body’s chakra system—red for the root, signifying vitality and grounding; white for the crown, invoking spiritual clarity. His visual language—rooted in simplicity and suggestion—invited contemplation and emotional response. Lodato’s lineage is evident in the influence of artists such as Mark Rothko, Barnett Newman, and Agnes Martin, all of whom shaped his understanding of painting as a physical and transcendent experience.

Peter earned his graduate degree from California State University and taught at ArtCenter College of Design and UC Irvine. In 2000, the Frederick R. Weisman Foundation presented a major retrospective of his work spanning two decades. In addition to the Whitney Biennial, Lodato’s work was exhibited at leading institutions including PS1 in New York, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. His paintings are held in the permanent collections of the Brooklyn Museum, Seattle Art Museum, Dallas Museum of Art, and the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, among others.

Beyond his artistic accomplishments, Peter was a cherished companion—curious, warm, and deeply attuned to the worlds of music, literature, and art. He was a painter’s painter, whose works graced the walls of fellow artists and admirers. In recent years, Peter had found joy and fulfillment both personally and creatively, producing some of the most profound work of his career. He is believed to have passed peacefully, playing his guitar—a fitting farewell for a man so attuned to harmony.

Peter is survived by his beloved son, Nicholas Lodato (“the other Lodato,” as Peter affectionately called him), his former wife Tatyana Thompson, and stepsons Alexander and Theodore Leshnick. He leaves behind a vast community of friends, collectors, and fellow artists who will miss him dearly.

LIGHT MATTER - PST ART: ART & SCIENCE COLLIDE - Exhibition Catalog Now Available

William Turner Gallery is pleased to present Light Matter, the first of two exhibitions, in partnership with the Getty’s PST ART: Art & Science Collide, which explore the intersections and influences between art and science.

Light Matter showcases the influences of scientific research on artistic process and intention, and builds on a collaborative experiment that began with LACMA’s innovative Art & Technology program, a collaboration between artists and industry that ran from the late 60s to early 70s.  As part of this initiative, Robert Irwin and James Turrell collaborated with NASA scientist and psychologist Ed Wortz at the Garrett Corporation. Together they developed a series of art and science-based investigations into the dynamics of perception, with a special emphasis on sensory deprivation. This intrigued Irwin and Turrell, who began to notice that perceptions were heightened after sessions in sensory deprivation tanks. Perhaps, they reasoned, the purpose of the work of art wasn’t as much about the work, as it was about the experience of perceiving the work.  Enter Light & Space in Southern California, where the emphasis shifted from looking at art as “object”, to art as “experience”.

Artists in Light Matter continue to expand on this notion, experimenting with the possibilities of their materials, often through scientific research and innovation, to achieve heightened visual effects that engage the viewer in the wonder of the phenomenology of perception. They utilize materials and approaches that  inspire the viewer to reflect - not only on “what” they are perceiving, but “how”. Many of the pieces require the viewer to interact with the works in unexpected ways - either by encouraging unusually active movement around, or stillness before, their works. The act of viewing engages the senses and heightens our sense of perception.

Light Matter includes work by Dawn Arrowsmith, Larry Bell, Casper Brindle, Shingo Francis, Jimi Gleason, Eric Johnson, Jay Mark Johnson, Peter Lodato, Andy Moses, and Roland Reiss.

Lodato holds a Graduate degree from California State University. His artistic contributions have been recognized through a solo retrospective curated by the Frederick Weisman Foundation (2000), and exhibitions at prestigious institutions such as PS1 in New York City (1978), Whitney Museum of American Art’s Biennial (1981), the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. His works grace esteemed collections in various public and private institutions, including the Brooklyn Museum, the Seattle Art Museum, the Dallas Museum of Art, and the San Diego Museum of Contemporary Art. This extensive presence in renowned collections underscores the impact and significance of Lodato's artistic vision within the realm of contemporary art. He lives and works in Venice, California.

Through his background in photography and graphic design, Takei first began piecemealing his disparate photographs (pre-Photoshop) and constructing them into sculptures to be photographed. This in turn, led to Takei becoming a sculptor.

Drawing from the discourse of Picasso, Braque and the Surrealists, Takei’s sculptures reference, yet expand upon these oeuvres in a playful syncretism of the two. His work transcends the cacophony often associated with Cubism, offering a vocabulary suffused with irony. that engages in the contemplation of diverging vantage-points in-the-round. The minimal yet commanding presence of his pieces draws parallel to the interlocking sculptures of the late Isamu Noguchi, echoing a profound artistic resonance. Through Intertwined, Koji Takei continues to redefine the boundaries of Cubism. As much as Takei’s pieces are Cubist in nature there is also an unmistakable Asian influence in the working method of the Japanese native.

As a Japanese-American residing in Los Angeles, Takei's influence extends far beyond his innovative work. He has taught at the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, California; Otis College of Art & Design in Los Angeles, and is currently a faculty member at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena and Academy of Art University in San Francisco. This underscores his commitment to shaping the next generation of artistic visionaries.

PETER LODATO featured in GOOD VIBRATIONS @ INTERSECT PALM SPRINGS

Intersect Palm Springs is a boutique fair that brings together a dynamic mix of more than 50 emerging and established contemporary and modern art and design galleries. An Opening Night Preview on Thursday, February 10 will be followed by General Admission from Friday, February 11 through Sunday, February 13.

Good Vibrations, organized by Shana Nys Dambrot (Arts Editor, LA Weekly) and Hunter Drohojowska-Philp (Author, Rebels in Paradise: The Los Angeles Art Scene and the 1960s), offers

an expanded view of geometric abstraction as it has evolved in Southern California from the 1950s to include the properties of light and the emotional and transcendent uses of color. Lorser Feitelson, Karl Benjamin, John Miller, Peter Lodato, Jim Isermann, Patrick Wilson, Dani Tull, Yunhee Min, Knowledge Bennett, Mary Anna Pomonis, and Jen Stark are among the artists to be included in this multi-generational show.
