ARRON STURGEON
Arron Sturgeon’s work explores how painting mutates and re-contextualizes meaning through integrating digital and painting processes. Inspired by the use of sampling in electronic music but instead of spinning other people's records going inward and sampling his own work to recombine into newly mutated combinations. Each series of paintings is used as the visual source material to digitally collage compositions for the next series. The dynamics of the painting process adds another filter as the work is translated from "digital" back to "analog" and is circumscribed within his own self-referential visual language. All of the paintings are "representational" in the sense that he is depicting a digital print in a similar manner to painting a landscape from a photograph. They are pictures of paintings. Using oil and encaustic through a process of layering and effacement Sturgeon builds up a multi-layered series of overlapping surfaces that evoke the luminosity and dimensionality of digital space.
